The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) handed to Axis Solutions the “Technology and Innovation Award” of the PTx2 Awards UITP MENA Region for its successful implementation of the “Intelligent Transportation Systems – ITS” on the Sharjah Public Transportation Buses operated by the KGL Passenger Transport Services (KGL PTS) in Sharjah, U.A.E. The award was given to Axis Solutions during the 59th UITP World Congress and Exhibition hosted by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai on April 10-14, 2011.

The first UITP World Congress and Exhibition was attended by 2,000 delegates coming from 80 countries. The exhibition with 252 exhibitors from 37 countries was visited by 9,700 guests that included ministers, elected officials, CEOs and high-level executives from the government and private sectors as well as operators.

The ITS Sharjah project was implemented by the Advanced Distribution and Public Transportation Department (ADPT) in AXIS which commenced in 2008 and was completed successfully by the end of 2010. The scope of the project covered the integrated solution of intelligent transportation systems including Automatic Fare Collection System (AFC), Automatic Vehicle Tracking System (AVLS), Planning and Scheduling System and Real-time Passenger Information System. AXIS has implemented some tools and functionality in the ITS Sharjah Project which is used for the first time in the MENA Region such as the SMS Service for real-time Passenger Information. In line with this, the Sharjah Transport operated by KGL PTS launched on April 13, 2011, a service, which enables commuters to inquire about the direction, trip period and arrival timing of a bus to any stop in the emirate via an SMS.
